Four imposing walls enclose a 4-hectare area in the heart of the old town, the epicenter of the Mormon Church known as Temple Square. Adorned with flowers, it houses the most significant sacred buildings of the Mormon community, including the Salt Lake Temple, The Tabernacle, and the Conference Centre. The Salt Lake Temple, constructed of stone and exclusively used for Mormon religious practices, is the largest sanctuary and the heart of the Mormon faith. It was built between 1853 and 1893 using grey granite in a New Gothic style, featuring six towers, the tallest of which stands at 68 meters. The Cathedral of the Madeleine, a Christian edifice with a Romantic exterior and Gothic interior, was built between 1900 and 1909. Salt Lake City has evolved into the hub of a highly successful religious empire. While the prosperous city is home to many people of different faiths, the influential Mormon Church largely dictates the region's political decisions. However, less than half of the city's population are church members.
