Desenzano del Garda Italy

Desenzano del Garda is an Italian town in the province of Brescia, in the Lombardy region, adjacent to Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy with a circumference of 144 km. Desenzano del Garda is 130 km from Milan and 28 km from Brescia, with a population of 26,862. Piazza Malvezzi is the city's main square and dates back to the sixteenth century, designed by the architect Giulio Todeschini. It is dedicated to the memory of a Desenzano native, Giuseppe Malvezzi, who was murdered by the fascists on April 28, 1945, along with eight comrades at Villa Fenaroli in Rezzato, which was then used as the headquarters of the German gendarmerie and a group of the Republican National Guard. The Old Port, an ancient port constructed during the Republic of Venice, was historically used for the unloading of goods and services before a drawbridge and its subsequent Venetian-style bridge (close Venetian blinds) would soon become one of the most photographed monuments of the town. In February 2016, the old port was encircled by a modern style walkway with 150 galvanised and 600 threaded bars. The work was done to facilitate access to moored boats, but it led to criticism and controversy among many Desenzano residents.
